The Division of Biological Sciences is a diverse community of faculty, researchers, students, alumni, community colleagues and staff dedicated to discovery, application, and education in the biological sciences. We encourage full participation in the division by our constituencies, especially our alumni.
For local biology alumni we have a variety of ways to get involved in the research and education missions of the division. For example, we invite you back to campus for a Deans' Breakfast with Biology Alumni. In these intimate and informal get-togethers Dean Steve Kay and Associate Dean Gabriele Wienhausen discuss their vision for the division. The breakfasts also serve as an opportunity for our alumni to voice their opinions about how we can engage them meaningfully in the day to day life of the division and to tell us what career, educational, and social programs we can provide to our alumni.

Alumnus Glenn Croston authors book on 75 Green Businesses You Can Start to Make Money and Make a Difference
The rapid growth of the $200 billion green economy is driven by the urgent need for solutions for environmental challenges like climate change, habitat loss, and resource depletion, and the growing recognition of the opportunity for businesses to provide these solutions. "75 Green Businesses You Can Start to Make Money and Make a Difference" describes a wide variety of businesses entrepreneurs from a broad variety of backgrounds can start and grow to provide these solutions, including businesses in renewable energy, green building, food, water, clothing, transportation, fuels, services, waste reduction and many others. To be released in August 2008 by Entrepreneur Press, the book opens the doors to people from many backgrounds to join the green business revolution and make the most of the opportunity of a lifetime to do well by doing right.

Two UCSD Biology Alumni Elected to NAS
UC San Diego biology alumni Ken A. Dill (Ph.D., 1978), a professor of pharmaceutical chemistry and associate dean for research in UCSF’s School of Pharmacy, and Bruce Beutler (BA, 1976, Muir College), chair of the Department of Genetics at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, were among 72 new members elected to the National Academy of Sciences this past April 2008. Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors an American scientist can receive.
