The Section of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution seeks tenured and tenure-track applicants with research interests in the evolution of multi-component interactions in biological systems.  Preference will be given to conceptually oriented individuals who use theory and/or emerging technologies to quantify experimentally the mechanistic and causal connections between genes, function, fitness, and evolution.  This position is part of an initiative for growth in the areas of systems and quantitative biology in the Division and at UCSD.  The Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego (http://biology.ucsd.edu/index.html) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

The successful candidate is expected to complement existing strengths in the Section and to participate in the development of systems and quantitative biology on campus.  Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. and have demonstrated excellence and creativity in research and scholarship. The successful candidate will participate in the graduate and undergraduate teaching curricula.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in equity and diversity with respect to: teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.  The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Start-up funds will be provided to establish a competitive research program, and salary will be based upon the University of California pay scale.

Complete applications received by October 31, 2011, will be assured of consideration.  Interested applicants must submit cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of research, a statement of teaching, contact information for 3-5 references and a statement describing their past experience and leadership in equity and diversity and/or their potential to make future contributions in the field. Applications must be submitted through the University of California San Diego’s Academic Personnel RECRUIT system at https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/. Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment

The Division of Biological Sciences at UC San Diego is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

The Section of Cell and Developmental Biology in the Division of Biological Sciences invites applications for a lecturer position with the strong preference for the rank of Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment (LPSOE). The LPSOE/LSOE series has been created for Academic Senate Faculty members whose expertise and responsibilities center on scholarship of teaching, learning, and undergraduate education. It is comparable to the tenure track assistant professor appointment but not tenure track. The section seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. Primary consideration will be given to candidates who have an understanding of the barriers facing women and domestic minorities in science careers or higher education careers generally (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background) and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to: teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The incumbent will teach in the introductory biology course series (BILD 1, 2 or 3) and existing upper division laboratory courses. The incumbent will also be expected to develop a research program in science education. As a member of the Associate Dean for Education’s educational leadership team, the incumbent will provide academic guidance, leadership and innovation for the divisional undergraduate programs, especially in the introductory Biology series. In this context, the incumbent is expected to initiate and/or participate in the development of grant applications for improving undergraduate education.

The successful candidate is expected to have:

  • substantial breadth of biological knowledge and biology training, to be prepared to teach introductory college courses that include topics ranging from evolution to cell biology, biochemistry, and physiology;
  • working knowledge of bioinformatic/systems biology tools and approaches, and computational methods in Biology;
  • significant university-level teaching experience (at a minimum 2 – 3 years); demonstrated success in teaching at the undergraduate level; experience in teaching large enrollment introductory Biology courses is preferred;
  • evidence of scholarly activity such as postdoctoral experience, publications and grantsmanship;
  • ability to successfully address the educational and academic needs of a diverse student population, incl. identifying and or developing effective teaching strategies for the educational advancement of students from groups underrepresented in higher education;
  • communication skills and cross-cultural abilities to maximize effective collaboration with a diverse community of campus and external colleagues;
  • knowledge of and experience in applying instructional strategies that are rooted in research on the science of learning;
  • ability to link insights from the study of learning to the practice of teaching and to engage in and contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning;
  • ability to or potential for providing educational leadership by supporting the transformation of the introductory biology course into courses that emphasize core concepts and computational thinking, problem solving, and the development of critical thinking skills.

Applications received by December 31, 2011 will be assured consideration. Applicants must submit the materials listed below, as well as the contact information for three references, via the online application.

Materials to submit (required in order to be considered for the position):

  • CV
  • Statement of current and proposed teaching and science education research (not to exceed 4 pages)
  • Copies of up to 3 – 5 recent publications
  • Personal statement summarizing past experience and leadership in equity and diversity (or potential to make contributions in the field)

Applications must be submitted through the University of California San Diego’s Academic Personnel RECRUIT System.
