Successful applicants will initiate and coordinate research programs to investigate the regulation of protein turnover by the ubiquitin proteasome system. Projects will include systems level analysis of protein degradation function and fidelity using state of the art quantitative proteomic platforms. Research will include integrative approaches utilizing molecular biology, cell-line engineering, biochemistry, protein production and purification, and proteomic techniques. Individual projects will be focused on network analysis of redox homeostasis and protein synthesis pathways, their interplay with the protein degradation machinery, and the development of new analytical methods to quantitatively interrogate their function. Successful applicants will join an interactive and enthusiastic research team and will be required to contribute to the intellectual and dedicated research lab environment as well as to the greater UCSD research community.
Salary is commensurate with experience per the Division & University postdoctoral salary scale.
Interested applicants should email a CV, a cover letter stating professional goals and interests, and the names and contact information of three references to e1bennett@ucsd.edu.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in biology, molecular or cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, or a related field. Candidates should also have strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to direct others, the ability to work independently and develop research projects aimed at the preparation of manuscripts for publication, and the ability to work cooperatively within a team. Technical experience with protein purification, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and mass spectrometry is preferred but not required.

Postdoctoral Scholar
Division of Biological Sciences
Ecology, Behavior & Evolution
The Section of Ecology, Behavior and Evolution at the University of California- San Diego invites applications for a position for a post-doctoral scholar to study the ecology of algal biofuel production. The successful candidate will participate in research on the effects of algal species traits, diversity in polyculture, zooplankton grazing and nutrient stoichiometry on biochemical composition of algal cells. The position is part of the San Diego Center for Algae Biotechnology (www.algae.ucsd.edu), an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers working on all aspects of the development and commercialization of algae biofuels. The present position will integrate lab culturing experiments to quantify species traits and environmental tolerances with field mesocosms to measure performance under outdoor conditions. Expected products include: (1) a database of stoichiometric, biochemical and life history traits for a wide range of eukaryotic and cyanobacterial strains; (2) a number of refereed publications describing experiments on the effects of algal diversity on lipid yield and losses to grazers
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree preferably in Aquatic or Microbial Ecology, Limnology or Oceanography. Experience with maintaining lab cultures of micro-organisms and measuring cell elemental and biochemical composition will be essential. The position will be available on or around January 1, 2010 and will be initially set for one year with the chance of continuing for up to three years. Salary will be Commensurate with experience per the Division of Biological Sciences postdoctoral salary scale. Applicants should send a CV, cover letter and contact information for three referees to Jonathan Shurin. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2010 and continue until the position is filled.
Commensurate with experience per the division postdoc salary scale.
Interested applicants should send CV and a cover letter stating professional goals and interests to Prof. Jonathan Shurin via email.
Experience with culturing of micro-organisms, water chemistry and analyses of cellular stoichiometry and biochemical composition. Knowledge of ecological theory and experience with advanced data analysis and publication of results in peer-reviewed journals.
December 1, 2010
Initially 1 year with possible annual extension. 5 year maximum.

Applications are invited for one or more postdoctoral positions to study mRNA localization events in Drosophila melanogaster. Particular focus will be on RNA-protein complexes that are actively transported along microtubules to the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum and that facilitate ER to Golgi trafficking (Wilhelm, JE Developmental Cell, 2005). Join the UCSD cell biology community and our growing group to examine how the RNA world interacts with membrane trafficking systems.
