The Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Chem-SURF) at
the University of California, Irvine (UCI), provides a unique 10-week
summer research opportunity for undergraduates to become fully immersed
in a wide range of exciting, cutting-edge specialized and interdisciplinary
research projects. With a goal of helping students gain the skills
and confidence to become independent researchers and make better career
decisions, the experience focuses on intensive and direct contact with
a large number of faculty and their graduate students through a series
of pre-research lectures, hands-on projects, weekly seminars and workshops,
industry field trips, and social activities.
Participants will have the opportunity to choose from a variety of challenging
and original research projects that explore a diverse and exciting range
of topics in chemical biology, chemical physics, and analytical, atmospheric,
bioinorganic, bioorganic, theoretical, inorganic, organic, physical,
and polymer chemistry.
The Chem-SURF Program is committed to promoting diversity within the
fields of science and engineering. Women, underrepresented minorities,
and individuals from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds
are especially encouraged to apply. Community College students,
who are transferring to a 4-year institution next year, are also encouraged
to apply.
Applications can be submitted online at the Chem-SURF Web site:

I
am writing to inform you of a fabulous opportunity to get involved
with the BIO International Convention,
which we are fortunate to have in
San Diego this year: June 17-20, 2008. If you will be 21 years
of age
by June, I thought that you might be interested in submitting an
application to volunteer at the spectacular convention with 30,000
attendees from all over the world. Click
here for more info on the convention.
Please note the following: Students should list their academic
advisor
or professor as a secondary reference, and me, as your primary reference
(see #2 and #3 below).
Volunteer Requirements
All volunteers will go through a screening process. In this process
your
credentials will be verified, including possible contact with your
employer/reference.
Volunteers should use a member of the 2008 Host Committee or a BIO staff
member as a reference. (If these do not apply, a corporate reference
may
be used).
Students must be at the Graduate Level with a demonstrated interest
in
life sciences and must provide two references. (An academic reference,
i.e. a professor or advisor, in addition to the committee member or
BIO
Staff member).
All volunteers must be at least 21 years of age to participate in the
program. There are no exceptions to this requirement.
Preference will be given to volunteers that work within the life science
sector.
All volunteers must attend one training session prior to their volunteer
assignment. Upon selection into the program you will receive more
information on these training sessions. There will be two sessions which
are tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 14.
Some Volunteer positions require 6:30 am start times.
Some Volunteer position shifts are 10 hours in length.
Some Volunteer positions are scheduled prior to the official opening
of
the convention.
Most Volunteer positions require long hours of standing.
All volunteers will be asked to complete an evaluation following the
convention in order to assist us in building the volunteer program for
future years.
Please contact Angie Kocken or email volunteer@bio.org
if you have any
questions concerning the Volunteer Program.
This
is a final reminder that the 33 rd Annual
WCBSUR Conference will take place on Saturday, April
12 th , at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego (see website
below).
It should be an exciting day as hundreds of
students and faculty mentors representing dozens of institutions from
all over the nation come together for a day-long celebration of science.
There will be ~150 seminar and poster presentations by undergraduate
researchers in biochemistry and all fields of biology; cash prizes
(20 in all) will be awarded for the best seminar and poster presentations.
Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Human Genome Research
Institute, will cap off the day with a keynote address entitled “Genomics
and the Future of Medicine and Society”.
If there are undergraduate researchers working
in your lab, I hope you will encourage them to consider participating.
Thanks and best wishes to you.

Hello! My name is Enrique Baloyra, and I work with the Fund for Public Interest Research. We are a non-profit that runs campaigns for some leading progressive organizations like the Sierra Club, the State PIRGs and the Human Rights Campaign. I am writing because I am hoping to get the word out to your graduating seniors about interviews we'll be holding this spring to fill leadership positions in our organization. We're hiring graduating seniors to help run our campaign offices next year as Canvass Directors. It's a lot of responsibility, mainly centered on hiring, training and managing a staff that goes out into communities to build grassroots support for the above organizations and their campaigns. We're looking for students who might be up for this challenge and would be passionate about working on environmental and social justice campaigns. We know that many students who would be interested in this work don't necessarily know how to find jobs like ours. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!
