Minor in Biological Sciences

These requirements apply to any student declaring a minor in biology beginning Fall 2005, regardless of when they started attending UCSD.

•  To receive a minor from the Division of Biological Sciences, a student must complete seven biology courses. These courses must be at least four units each and total at least twenty-eight units of course work. 

         Lower Division Requirements

         BILD 1 and BILD 3

         or

         BILD 10 and BILD 3

         Upper Division Requirements

         Any five upper-division biology courses offered by the Division of Biological Sciences at UCSD

•  Students may apply transferable biology courses from another institution toward the lower-division requirements, after obtaining approval from the UCSD Division of Biological Sciences.

•  No courses taken outside of the Division of Biological Sciences may be applied toward the biology minor.

•  All courses must be taken for a letter grade.

•  The minimum GPA requirement for the Biology minor is 2.0 in the upper-division courses.

•  Advanced placement (AP) biology scores may be applied toward the minor.

•  BISP 195 may not be used toward the Biology minor.  One quarter of BISP 196, 197 or 199 may be counted toward the minor.

•  Students may not minor and major in the Division of Biological Sciences.

Biology Minor Application Instructions:

  • List only the courses required for the minor (see example below).
    • The minor requires the following: BILD 1 and BILD 3 or BILD 10 and BILD 3. Do NOT list BILD 2 or lower division chemistry courses on your minor application.
  • Under ‘Institution,’ please list: UCSD or Advanced Placement Credit. If you have completed a lower division Biology course at another College and it has articulated as BILD 10, 1 or 3, please list it as if it was taken at UCSD.
    • For example: BIO/ 210A/ Mesa/6.5/Letter should be listed as BILD/1/The Cell/UCSD/4.00/Letter.
  • Under ‘Grade Options,’ please list as:  Letter or Pass/Fail (We will only accept P/NP for AP credit or BISP 199)
  • List only 5 upper division Biology courses in the Upper Division section (Organic Chemistry courses will not count towards the minor).
  • If you do not fill out the form correctly your minor application will be rejected and you will have to resubmit it.
