Why a Honeybee?
Honeybees are not native to the Brazil, but this photo shows an Africanized honeybee feeding on a flower in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Why did we choose this photo? Sadly, Africanized honeybees are so common in Brazil due to their invasive success and their cultivation by beekeepers, most of the bees that you find on flowers are honeybees. Therefore this image illustrates what one commonly sees in Brazil but also demonstrates the importance of learning more about native pollinators. For more information on native pollinators, please see the exercise Why are bees important? For more information about Africanized bees, please see the exercise Killer Bees!
