Biology of Interferons

Interferons comprise a family of polypeptides that exhibit diverse biological effects such as inhibition of cell growth, protection against viral infections and modulation of immune responses. Based on these pleiotropic effects, interferons find widespread clinical use in the treatment of cancers, viral infections and autoimmune diseases.

Our objective is to elucidate the mechanisms by which interferons accomplish these diverse goals on a molecular level. Furthermore, our laboratory is interested in the innate immune processes that govern the induction of interferon production as a consequence of pathogen recognition.
