Journal Articles or Papers:

Six journal articles or papers, or groups of papers, are assigned for the course. These will be emphasized in the Journal Article Section given by Smith. Copies of the papers are in the Soft Reserves Course Reader. The articles and week that they are assigned for discussion are given below and on the course Syllabus.

Five articles are research articles, and one is a group of short review articles.

You are responsible for the main points of the paper, not the experimental details.

These journal articles are fair game for the exams. You are responsible for Articles 1 and 2 for Midterm 1; Articles 3 and 4 for Midterm 2; and for ALL Articles for the Final Exam.

Tips on Reading Research Journal Articles:

1. Read the Abstract and Introduction first for major take-home information and background.

2. Study the Figures and Tables; figure out what the data mean and its relation to the Abstract.

3. Read the Discussion. Relate these conclusions to the Figure and Table data.

4. Read the Results for details of how the data were obtained and what they mean.

5. Now, read the Materials and Methods or Experimental Details sections as desired for in-depth reading.

6. Re-read the Discussion and other parts of the paper as needed.
