The goal is to understand energy producing pathways (glycolysis, citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis, and fatty acid oxidation) and biosynthetic pathways (gluconeogenesis, glycogen synthesis, fatty acid synthesis, and amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism) including the metabolism of signaling molecules like neurotransmitters and steroid hormones. The course pays particular attention to human physiology, and the structural organization of pathways is discussed in terms of cellular location and compartmentalization, as well as coordination of pathways among different organs (metabolic integration). The importance of biological membranes for metabolic integration and regulation is addressed through discussions of transport systems for small metabolites as well as the central role of membrane biogenetic pathways in human lipid metabolism. |
Biology Student Affairs will distribute final exams for several days following the end of the quarter, and again the first full week of the subsequent quarter. For Spring 2000 exams, the distribution dates will be: June 20-23, from 8:30-12:00 and 1:00-4:00

Special attention will be given to pathway comparison
among different species. This aspect of the course will be based on Internet
databases and specifically the metabolic pathway database (KEGG)
at the Japanese Genomenet WWW Server.
A Internet based lecture
supplement can be accessed here (web reader).
